Tummy Tuck
It comes as no surprise that many people find things that they would like to change about themselves. For many, the abdomen is a spot of contention. Even with proper diet, exercise, and weight control, getting a flat and well-toned stomach is not always possible.
Whether it’s because of aging, pregnancy, or significant fluctuations in your weight, it can be incredibly frustrating to be mostly fit, but left with a distended or protruding abdomen. When diet and exercise don’t work, the next step may be to consider a tummy tuck. Tummy tucks, also known as abdominoplasty, remove the excess fat and skin on the stomach, creating a flatter and more toned tummy.
How Does the Tummy Tuck Procedure Work?
When getting a tummy tuck, you will usually be put under either general anesthesia, or given intravenous sedation. This is to ensure your comfort during the procedure. After the medications have been administered, your surgeon will create a horizontal incision that is located between the pubic hairline and the belly button. The size of the incision will depend on the amount of excess skin that needs to be removed.
When the abdominal skin gets lifted, the abdominal muscles are repaired at the same time. After the first incision, a second incision is created around the navel, if it is necessary to remove any excess skin on the upper abdomen as well. The upper abdominal skin is pulled down vertically, where the excess skin is trimmed off, and the remaining tightened skin is then sutured together. After suturing, the surgeon constructs a new belly button opening.
What is Tummy Tuck Recovery Like?
Most patients find that recovery from a tummy tuck can take about a week. During this time, you’ll be asked to wear a compression garment, which helps keep swelling down, as well as supports your healing abdomen after the surgery. You’ll have bandages applied to your incisions as well. After recovery, it will take about a week or two to see the full results of your tummy tuck.
